HopgoodGanim Lawyers has appointed one of Australia’s pre-eminent mining and petroleum lawyers, James Plumb, to its award-winning resources and energy practice. James will join as a partner of the firm and will work closely with practice lead Dr Jonathan Fulcher and Partner Damian Roe as a senior leader supporting clients nationally. His appointment is effective 1 July 2023.

James is a lateral hire from Carter Newell Lawyers with over two decades’ experience advising on the sale and acquisition of mining and petroleum projects, project developments and the impact of various state-based petroleum and mining regulatory regimes. James also advises on a range of commercial transactions specific to the sector, including commodity sale and transportation arrangements, operating and joint venture negotiations, land access and compensation requirements, royalty arrangements and overlapping tenure negotiations.
James is a past Chair of the Queensland Law Society's Energy & Resources Law Committee, a Queensland committee member of the Energy and Resources Law Association, and a past President of the Queensland Petroleum Exploration Association (QUPEX Inc.). He has been ranked by Best Lawyers® as a leader in Australia across energy law, natural resources law, oil and gas law and mining law since 2017 and was Best Lawyers® Brisbane Lawyer of the Year for energy law in 2023.
