HopgoodGanim Lawyers are proud to announce the arrival of a number of senior lateral hires to kick start the new year. In the past two weeks, the firm has welcomed Special Counsel, Helen Donovan, and Senior Associates, Gemma Sweeney and Andrew Foyster in support of our growth plans for the year ahead.
Helen Donovan, Special Counsel
Helen Donovan joins the firm as a Special Counsel in our Workplace and Employment team. She comes to HopgoodGanim with over a decade of experience in workplace, employment and safety law and has a strong track record in the resolution of complicated employment and industrial disputes, advocacy in the Fair Work Commission, workplace investigations and employment law related advice in the context of corporate transactions.
In addition to her lengthy career in private practice, Helen has offered clients the benefit of her experience working in-house as a secondee for a number of large employers, including those in mining, infrastructure, banking and finance, and defence.
Gemma Sweeney, Senior Associate
Gemma Sweeney joins as a Senior Associate in our Resources and Energy practice and has significant experience advising on a wide range of commercial transactions across the mining, renewables and oil and gas industries. Gemma has a particular interest in critical minerals, carbon capture and hydrogen, and has worked extensively across the sale and acquisition of mining and petroleum projects, joint ventures and project funding arrangements, mining and petroleum tenure management and approval pathways, foreign investment approvals and negotiating key commercial contracts such as offtake and royalty agreements.
Gemma’s arrival comes shortly after the recent appointment of Resources & Energy Partner Adel van der Walt, and the appointment of Partner James Plumb to the practice in July 2023.

Andrew Foyster joins HopgoodGanim as a Senior Associate in our Family and Relationship Law team and brings his expertise working across all aspects of family law. Further, Andrew’s corporate and commercial experience allows him to assist clients on a variety of related issues including debt recovery, bankruptcy and insolvency, commercial litigation, body corporate disputes and guarantee advice.
