Now in our 50th year, we’re celebrating 5 Decades of Exceptional Outcomes for our people, clients and community.

For our community, we’re proud to feature some of the charities and organisations that we’ve formed strong partnerships with over the years, to explore the history and value of these relationships to HopgoodGanim, and to highlight the incredible work they are doing to assist their community.

Founded by the University of Queensland (UQ) in 2003, the Queensland Brain Institute (QBI) is a leading neuroscience research institute focused on understanding brain function and developing effective prevention and treatment of brain disorders.

QBI’s research spans across brain development and plasticity, cognition and behaviour, mental health, ageing and dementia, and brain injury.

Through collaborations with clinicians, government and industry partners, QBI translates its discoveries into new therapeutic approaches aimed at improving the treatment of brain conditions such as Motor Neurone Disease (MND), dementia, stroke, Parkinson’s disease and schizophrenia.

QBI’s research has been integral to UQ’s success in neuroscience and their research quality is reflected in its impressive accomplishment in securing funding from the National Health and Medical Research Council and the Australian Research Council, totalling over $110 million in competitive grants.

Most recently, QBI researchers have discovered a new molecule that protects brain cells from damage caused by oxidative stress and autophagy, which are processes linked to many brain diseases. They have also developed a potential new treatment for MND, announcing successful results from a human clinical trial.

HopgoodGanim Lawyers is proud to have supported QBI for over 15 years, providing financial contributions to assist in their research, provisioning legal services, and championing their success in the community.

Our involvement with QBI started in 2005, on the back of a close relationship between Mr Jeff Maclean AM, a long-standing client, and Bruce Humphrys, the former managing partner at HopgoodGanim. Jeff’s father sadly passed away from MND. One of Ross’s great legacies was the creation of the Ross Maclean Senior Research Fellowship, which Jeff has continued to support. Shortly after, Bruce became a member of the QBI Advisory Board and has continued to support their research for over two decades. Commenting on the partnership Bruce said:

We are immensely grateful to support the Queensland Brain Institute. The work they are doing not only advances our understanding of the brain but also paves the way for innovative treatments and research that can assist our wider community. It is a privilege to be a part of their journey."

Historically, MND has been a cause close to the team at HopgoodGanim, following the advanced MND diagnosis and passing of the late Joji (George) Noda, a senior Japanese advisor at the firm. George joined HopgoodGanim in the late 1980’s and was a significant part of our history for more than 10 years. Following his passing, supporting motor neuron research at QBI became an obvious fit for HopgoodGanim’s philanthropic efforts.

QBI’s research and discoveries continue to have a profound impact on the understanding and treatment of neurological conditions and for over 15 years, our involvement has been directly driven by the value of their work and the effect this will have on a potentially global scale."

We are proud to have partnered with QBI as they continue to push the boundaries of brain science to discover life-saving treatments for brain disorders.
